Why Worklife Balance is BS
Here's what works instead
Hey friend,
I wrote about this on LinkedIn and it resonated with a lot of people so here goes…
“Work-life balance” is bullshit.
Know why?
Unless you’re on the TV show Severance, your brain doesn't have an "off switch" for work (by the way, is anyone watching that?).
Moreover, striving for work-life balance is a pointless pursuit.
Here’s what works instead:
Work-life harmony.
I know, I know. Sounds like a load of bollacks. But hear me out...
I discovered this by accident after quitting my corporate job.
That dreaded Sunday feeling? Gone.
Constant burnout? Gone.
Trading time for money? Gone.
The Big Revelation
I was in a meeting staring at the ceiling while two nerds were having an intense debate about which algorithm was better and that is when I faced a hard-hitting truth:
I did NOT want to be doing this for the next 30 years…
So I doubled down and started focusing on what I could see myself doing indefinitely.
Because let's be real - retirement is a moving target these days (I would also wager that the state pension will be gone soon).
The Crazy Part?
When you're working on something you actually give a damn about, you can work twice as long without burning out.
Mad, right?
To reiterate, this Isn't About Getting Rich
It's about living life on your terms.
It just happens that right now is probably the best time in history to have both.
Remember: we spend a huge part of our adult lives working - so treating it like a separate part of our identify is denying reality.
Opportunity
This is exactly why I jumped at the chance to work with Thoughtleadr. - the best personal branding agency on the planet.
They get it:
No BS timesheets
Work when you work best
No soul-crushing commute
Actually treating people like humans (wild concept, I know)
And yeah, we're still growing like crazy!
Now, I have it both ways—the freedom to work on my own businesses and the cushion of a contract that gives me regular clients.
What Now?
Stop chasing that mythical "balance."
If you feel the need to “balance” it then you’re doing the wrong thing.
Start building something that actually works for YOU and your family.
Not what your LinkedIn feed says you should want.
Not what your old boss thinks is "professional."
What works for YOU.
(And if you're in Europe, UK, or Canada and can work US Eastern hours, we're looking for another Creative Director at Thoughtleadr. Hit reply if you're interested.)
Talk soon,
Lewis
